JBUAS has delivered the UgCS Pergam Falcon TDLAS system to a UK client for use on methane surveys in 2022. Industry forecasts suggest the volume of work in 2022 will triple. Further systems will be ordered to meet these expectations via a framework arrangement.

The Integrated System

JBUAS, in partnership with SPH Engineering (UgCS), can provide a methane detection & survey solution to support ISO16064 today. Operators will utilise the same technology for future quantification requirements. Therefore, investing in this technology today will enable drone survey companies to meet future EA requirements.

Make an enquiry to find out more.

The system kit utilises the UGC-SkyHub and TTF system, proven reliable with the DJI M210, M600 Pro, and DJI M300 RTK.

The drone methane detection & survey system from JBUAS is an integrated solution that includes an eye-safe class 2 laser from Pergam-Suisse. Consequently, this system enables Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS), which records methane gas in Parts Per Million x Metres (PPMxM). This approach provides a more accurate assessment of gas release than simple handheld measurement methods.

Make an enquiry to find out more.

About Methane

The production and transport of coal, natural gas, and oil emit methane gas. Additionally, livestock, agricultural practices, land use and landfill waste all contribute to methane emissions. To compare these gases, scientists use a metric called Global Warming Potential (GWP). GWP compares a gas’s warming effect against an equivalent mass of carbon dioxide (CO₂). The following data comes from an IPCC support paper authored in 2018. Overall, the research gives a good indication of the effects of the gases over time. Over a 20-year period, methane gas is 84x more effective at warming our climate.

Methane can be characterised as a “super-pollutant”. Methane remains in the atmosphere for only 12 years. However, it is up to 86 times more powerful in warming the climate in the short term than the most discussed greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. Moreover, methane is also a major precursor for tropospheric ozone, which harms both human health and plant growth. While some 40% of methane is natural, about 60% of it originates from anthropogenic sources, mostly in the energy, agriculture, and waste sectors.

Drone Methane detection: Viridor is demonstrating its ambition to tackle climate change by supporting the development of new technologies for measuring and reporting methane emissions across its UK landfill sites.
Using the latest drone methane detection sensor technology with UgCS SkyHub from JBUAS, Viridor will gain timely and insightful information to enable the business to meet the industry specific challenges identified by the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) in respect of landfills.

Viridor has recently published the report: Decarbonising Our Waste: Viridor’s Roadmap to Net Zero and Net Negative Emissions. This details the company’s commitment to reach net zero by 2040 and net negative by 2045.

The company has established a project team to plan a series of methane measurement surveys across several UK sites. These surveys will take place from the summer of 2021 and will utilise an innovative drone methane detection & measurement system. It is hoped that this approach to measuring methane releases will not only support continuing innovation across Viridor sites, but it will also become an invaluable methodology for meeting the company’s own commitments and the requirements of the Paris Agreement (2015) as applied by the Environment Agency and government departments, such as DEFRA and BEIS.

Viridor’s Director of Sustainability Tim Rotheray said the project would provide invaluable information and help drive Viridor’s decarbonisation commitments.

He said: “Viridor has a history of investing in new technologies designed to improve our environmental performance. This project will improve our ability to identity and solve any local methane emissions as soon as they occur. Methane is a product of the waste we receive and outside of our control. We strive to drive this down through better monitoring and this project is a major boost. Viridor supports a ban on methane-producing waste to landfill to drive down climate change causing greenhouse gasses from waste.”

The project is an industry partnership with Viridor’s technology and service partners.

Drone Ground Penetrating Radar (Drone GPR)

High Compliance has become the first company in the UK to invest in the fully integrated UgCS drone-based GPR system.

Drone Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) – A Useful Tool for the Construction Industry

High Compliance has become the first company in the UK to purchase the UgCS Drone Ground Penetrating Radar (Drone GPR) system. This investment underlines their commitment to leading with innovation. High Compliance purchased the Drone GPR for utilities detection. The system provides access areas that are conventionally hard or impossible to reach. Construction industry projects often require large areas to be surveyed prior to development. However, some of these areas are not easily accessed with conventional systems. The Zond 500 MHz system will identify metallic and non-metallic utilities in depths up to 5 m in typical soil. We look forward to updating the market on their trials of the system. The trials are expected to begin in late April or early May 2021.

Bathymetry with Drone Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

The drone GPR measures the depth of water and profiles the bottom of freshwater rivers, lakes, and ponds to depths of 15 metres. Benefits include surveying frozen water and areas where ice partially covers the surface. Compared to boat-based bathymetry (equipped with echo sounders), drone GPR provides more accurate survey-line tracking through GPS-guided automated flight. In most cases, a drone makes it a lot easier to deliver the necessary equipment to the desired area.

Get data sets here.

Strat Profiling

Strata profiling is a standard task that needs to be done before any serious area development or construction works. The standard technique is drilling dozens of holes or conducting a GPR survey on carts. A drone GPR integrated system delivers higher work productivity and enables safer work conditions for the personnel in cases of rough terrain. Drone GPR allows finding any potentially dangerous underground water streams or lakes.

Get data sets here.

Utilities Mapping

Underground infrastructure mapping is important before construction begins. It is particularly valuable where records are incomplete or missing.
